Jason Messinger Mural Commissions Unveiled
at Illinois Medical District Stops
on CTA Blue Line, at Ogden and Paulina
A dedication ceremony was held on August 21 for the new station and station-renovations for the Illinois Medical District stop on the Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line. Included were comments by CTA President Dorval Carter Jr and by Mayor Rahm Emanuel that introduced artist Jason Messinger and his custom commission of five hand-carved black porcelain tile murals, designed for the three station entrance houses of the IMD train stop. The Ogden main entrance houses two murals and the Paulina location one. The Damen entrance will showcase two additional murals, to be installed later this month. The artist was awarded the $100,000 commission after a national search, as part of the $23 million renovation and remodel project for the train stop.

Chicago Artists Map Their Journeys, in Multi-Medium Show in the Loop
“Artists’ Atlas: Mapping Their Journey” is a group art show at the State Street Gallery. Nine Chicago artists explore and map location, memory, and identity in this multi-medium art show. The local artists include Kass Copeland, Deanna Krueger, Alan Emerson Hicks, Jason Messinger, Matt Nichols, Emily Rapport, Jordan Scott, Marya Veeck and Joey Wozniak. The artists’ unique perspectives and unconventional approaches to materials are reflected in a variety of both two and three dimensional forms. The show includes paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, tile murals, assemblage constructions, and installations. By mapping places, charting memories, and tracing the elements of identity, the nine artists present a visual atlas of our interior worlds.

Curated by Jason Messinger, ‘Artists’ Atlas: Mapping Their Journey’ exhibits at the State Street Gallery, prominently located at the corner of Van Buren and State Street, at 401 South State Street, Chicago. A reception with the artists will be held on Thursday, October 11th, from 5 to 7 pm. The show runs from Monday September 24th, 2018, through Thursday December 20th, 2018. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, from 10am to 6pm. The gallery is free and open to the viewing public. All artwork is available for sale. Artist-designed gifts and prints also available in the ‘Art Mart’ gift shop. Experience artwork from the building’s numerous resident artists, and enjoy the newest guest artist exhibitions by Amanda Brodie Stenlund and Jessica Sawyers.

The building opens its doors to the public only four times a year. For over thirty years this artist incubator space has provided Chicago artists, working in a variety of mediums, with professional studio spaces to pursue their craft.

Over fifty local artists and artisans work here, including sculptors, painters, photographers, ceramic artists, print-makers, jewelry designers, textile artisans, and much more. With one-of-a-kind hand-made artwork and gifts by both the building artists and guest artists, the event offers something for the whole family to enjoy. Free and open to the public.

The State Street Gallery is please to announce its fall exhibition, Connections, highlighting the work of over 30 artists and artisans living and working in Illinois. The juried collection is largely tactile and three dimensional including work in ceramic, wood, blown glass, fused glass, steel, textile, oil paintings, photography, and painted glass.

This is the 5th curated exhibition hosted by the galleries of Robert Morris University that celebrate the vast talents of artists and artisans living and working in Illinois. In addition to the works on display in the exhibition, smaller hand-crafted items by the featured artists will be available for immediate purchase in the ArtMart section of the State Street Gallery.
